The college became under the initiative of John Allen, who served as its first president from 1957 until his retirement in 1970.During this time, the college extended quickly, due to a limited extent to the first graduate degree projects beginning in 1964. Allen was known for his resistance to school sports for a situation all the more scholastically focused. Allen's definitive legacy was to be the first individual to construct a cutting edge state college without any preparation: "As a totally new and separate organization, the University of South Florida turned into the first new foundation of its kind to be considered, arranged and manufactured in the United States in the twentieth century."Today the John and Grace Allen Administration Building, named after the college's establishing president and his wife, houses crucial Tampa grounds offices including Student Affairs, the Admissions Welcome Center, and the Controller's Office.
